Heritage Garden is more than a place where food is grown—it’s a living connection to the land and to a way of life built on stewardship, relationship, and community. Located along the fertile river bottom of the Brazos River on the historic property of Homestead Heritage in Waco, Texas, our farm sits on over 500 acres of land dedicated to raising crops and livestock in harmony with nature.
Here, regenerative farming practices guide everything we do. Nearly 33 acres are cultivated using actual "horse-power", while pastures and hayfields provide space for animals to thrive. We believe healthy soil leads to healthy crops, healthy livestock, and healthy people—so we care for every acre with intention and attention.
Heritage Garden is part of the broader vision of simple living, rooted in faith and strong family values at Homestead Heritage, the agricultural and artisan community that surrounds our farm. Homestead Heritage was founded in 1973 and continues to inspire how we work, share, and thrive together. Learn more here.
At the center of Heritage Garden’s daily rhythms is Grady Phelan and his family. Grady, along with his wife Erin and their seven children, bring passion, care, and steadfast commitment to the life and work on the farm. What they cultivate goes beyond crops—it’s a culture of hands-in-the-soil living, where every sunrise brings new labors and every sunset offers gratitude for the day’s harvest.
Growing up with a deep appreciation for holistic agriculture, Grady was raised on a cattle and sheep ranch in Oklahoma and later apprenticed at the notable and regenerative "Polyface Farm" before stepping into full-time stewardship at Heritage Garden. Today, he manages the day-to-day work of raising chickens, milk cows, draft horses, and heirloom crops that nourish local families and communities.
Family life on the farm is woven into everything they do—from tending livestock and cultivating crops to sharing meals around the table and teaching their children the value of purposeful work. Their dedication reflects the ongoing Heritage Garden mission:
